Producer

The role of the producer is vital, very vital to the running of your movie. A lot of people do not fully understand the role of the producer, they think it’s the guy or girl who puts money into the movie, that’s it. But that’s not true at all. The producer does far more than this. To find out what, you’ll need to read on:

From Con Air and Gone In Sixty Seconds through to Pirates Of The Caribbean and CSI, Jerry Bruckheimer is one of the most well-known producers in Hollywood. Commonly found working alongside Michel Bay, and other top directors, his work just seems to always succeed. Want to be a producer? Then he should be your idol.

So what does a movie producer actually do in his line of work then?

The following list of tasks are the main jobs that a movie Producer will have to do when working on a movie. Of course, the producer can delegate these jobs to other members of the crew, but in the long run, it is vital that the Producer ensures that these tasks are completed:

• Coordinate all aspects of the film making process. From ensuring that locations are ready to be used to shoot at through to ensuring that a shoot is logistically possible.

• A producer must ensure that all crew and cast that are required for the next of shooting at free to do so. It is a disaster to find a cast member is tied down to another job. The producer’s job is to ensure that this never happens.

• More often than not, if there is a problem on set then people will turn to the producer, the producer will be in charge of sorting these issues. So basically, the producer’s job is to be a problem solver. They need to deal with the day-to-day problems that can occur on a movie set and will need to be prepared to resolve them.

What traits does the perfect producer have?

Lots. In fact, probably more than a director. They need to be so versatile in order to keep the tasks completed on time and on track. Without the following traits, there is no doubt that a producer will fail. They need to be every single one of the following, not just one:

• Organized / Regulated / Structured

• Communicative / Expressive / Unreserved

• Reliable / Punctual / Devoted

• Quick Thinking / Sensible / Rational

• Resilient / Strong / Flexible

If producer wants to succeed then they need to be all of them. Every single one of the above. They can’t cut corners nor can they skip anything. They have to cover it all. They have to think of all the problems.

Hopefully you will find that this is a sufficient amount of information for giving you an insight into producing and they do. If you need more help with producers or producing then ask in the comment section below or post a thread in the forum.

The discussion of establishing shots and a producer’s jobs and skills was very helpful, excellent. I am doing a final revision of my spec screenplay before I learn how to market it, so the information was especially helpful.
